Unwitting Bodhisattvas — How Politics Encourages Awareness of The Persona / Shadow Duality
In a recent lecture, Ven. Robina Courtin, a Tibetan Buddhist nun from Australia, provided an analysis of Donald Trump during which she said, “He may be a bodhisattva" (in Buddhist teaching, a being who leads others to enlightenment). She laughed with the audience, but then added very seriously, “You never know. Anything is possible.” Our current political climate is filled with opportunities to continue our schizoid relationship to what C.G. Jung called “Persona” and “Shadow.” But can we use this climate to heal the split,  rather than make it more permanent? We'll explore basic Jungian concepts of persona and shadow and  apply them to current events. Our goal: transcending duality and seeing both persona and shadow as examples of attachment and aversion, which can be understood and released.
