Revitalizing our World — Thomas Merton’s Understanding of Contemplation
Can a contemplative life à la Thomas Merton make an impact in our world? A profound contemplative experience of the oneness of humanity transformed Merton from a world-denying ascetic to a monk using his voice to address the social issues of his day. He began to see the contemplative life as necessary in order to effect a positive change in one’s behavior, in one’s consciousness, but also in the world itself. Solitude is necessary for the contemplative life to flourish, but it is in community that compassion and love take root and thrive. In this talk we will explore various aspects of living a contemplative life and the difference it makes in our lives and in our world. What do we lose without contemplative living? What do we gain with it?
