Religion in a Changing World
Weather Cancellation! Due to dangerously low temperatures forecast for the region, this class is cancelled. We will reschedule this program with Dr. Sadri for the Spring-Summer Session.
How has the function of religion in society changed? It used to represent the tribal spirit. Then it was dragooned to generate solidarity for empires and then for, nation states. In the thought of Rousseau it was a "civil religion," buttressing morality. Kant saw it as necessary to keep us from falling into despair. Hegel considered it the heart of the “spirit” and the soul of the society. Modern spirituality privatized religion, making it something to be chosen from a variety of creeds in a "spiritual supermarket." And finally, the fundamentalist reaction to modern society brought religion back to its tribal function, separating the saved from the dehumanized damned. It's been quite a journey. But what is true religion? Where does it fit in modern society?
