Joseph Needham was a brilliant Cambridge scientist and a bit of an eccentric; but he loved China, its history, and its culture. The first volume of his magnificent Science and Civilization in China was published in 1954 and eighteen volumes were released before his death in 1995. There are now 24, with more to come. As the workshop unfolds, we’ll take up what’s known as “the Needham question” — why did the meteoric rise of modern science take place in the West, rather than in China?

The great Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, one of the two greatest influences on Buddhism in the 21st century. The other is His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Thich became a figure of global renown during the war in Vietnam, as a result of his steadfast commitment to building peace among all the peoples of Vietnam. His first book, Lotus in a Sea of Fire, introduced the ideal and practice of “engaged Buddhism,” the embrace of social and economic justice and universal human rights.
